Cloudy pool water is one of the most common problems we get called about, and it’s also one of the most frustrating. The water isn’t green, it isn’t obviously dirty, it just looks dull and hazy. The good news is that cloudy water almost always comes down to one of a handful of causes, and once you know which one you’re dealing with, it’s usually a quick fix.
Cloudy water is caused by tiny suspended particles that are too small for your filter to catch. Figuring out where those particles are coming from is the whole game. Start with your water chemistry, then work through your equipment.
1. Unbalanced water chemistry
This is the most common culprit. High pH, high alkalinity, or high calcium hardness can all cause minerals to fall out of solution and cloud your water. In Arizona, where hard water is a constant factor and evaporation keeps concentrating minerals, this happens often.
Test your water first. Aim for pH between 7.4 and 7.6, alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm, and calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm. Getting these back in range often clears the water on its own within a day or two.
2. Low or ineffective chlorine
If your sanitizer level is too low, bacteria and early-stage algae start multiplying before they’re visible as green. That haze is often algae you’re catching before it fully blooms. Arizona sun burns through chlorine fast, so levels drop quicker here than most places.
Also check your cyanuric acid, the stabilizer that protects chlorine from UV. Too little and your chlorine burns off within hours. Too much and your chlorine gets locked up and stops working effectively, even when the test says levels are fine.
3. A dirty or failing filter
If your chemistry checks out, look at your filter next. A clogged filter can’t trap fine particles, and worn-out media stops working even after a good cleaning. Check your pressure gauge. If it’s running 8 to 10 PSI above your normal clean pressure, it’s time to backwash or clean the cartridges.
If cleaning doesn’t help, the media itself may be spent. Cartridges typically last 1 to 3 years, and sand needs replacing every 5 to 7 years.
4. Poor circulation
Water that isn’t moving properly can’t get filtered properly. If your pump isn’t running long enough, especially during summer when your pool is under the most stress, particles stay suspended. Most Arizona pools need 8 to 10 hours of run time during peak summer months.
Also check that your return jets are angled to create good circulation and that there are no dead spots where water sits still.
5. Environmental debris
Dust storms, pollen, heavy swimmer loads, sunscreen, and body oils all introduce fine particles that cloud water. After a haboob or a busy weekend of swimming, some haze is normal. It usually clears with a good filter run and a light shock treatment.
The fast fix
If you want to clear it quickly, work in this order. Test and balance your chemistry first. Clean or backwash your filter. Shock the pool, ideally in the evening so the sun doesn’t burn off the chlorine before it works. Then run your pump continuously for 24 hours and brush the walls and floor to keep particles suspended so the filter can catch them.
If the water still hasn’t cleared after that, a clarifier or flocculant can help clump the fine particles together so your filter can grab them. Clarifiers work gradually over a day or two. Flocculants work faster but require vacuuming the settled material to waste.
If it keeps coming back
Cloudiness that returns again and again usually points to something structural, like an undersized pump, failing filter media, or mineral levels that have climbed too high to manage with chemistry alone. At that point the fix is equipment or a partial drain and refill, not more chemicals.
